Ammonium carbonate solution;

The molecular formula of ammonium carbonate solution is (NH4)2CO3.

  • Ammonium carbonate solution serves as a bench reagent in the laboratory.
  • It is used in fire extinguishers and textile dyeing.
  • Ammonium carbonate is also used in baking powder and ceramics.
  • Ammonium carbonate solution is a neutralization agent.

Apparatus needed to prepare ammonium carbonate solution.

  • Volumetric flask
  • Reagent bottle
  • Beaker
  • Stirring rod.
  • Balance
  • funnel

The chemicals needed are;

  • Concentrated Ammonia
  • Ammonium carbonate solid
  • Distilled water.

Method:

  • Measure 96g of the ammonium carbonate on your balance in a beaker of known mass.
  • Then measure 70ml of concentrated ammonia in a beaker.
  • Add the 96g of ammonium carbonate to the 70 ml concentrated ammonia solution and add a little distilled water.
  • Stir the mixture thoroughly to dissolve.
  • After it dissolves, transfer the solution into a 1000ml volumetric flask and rinse the beaker.
  • Add enough distilled water to the mixture to get to the 1000ml solution.
  • Transfer the prepared solution into a storage bottle and label it with the names, date, and batch numbers.

Safety precautions and storage.

  • Wear goggles while working because it is harmful and it can cause harm to the eyes.
  • Put on gloves to prevent it from getting to your hand or skin even though it is basic, it can burn the skin if it comes to direct contact with it.
  • It is harmful if ingested.
  • Rinse the beaker thoroughly with distilled water.
  • Do not expose the reagent to air.
  • Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated space.
  • The reagent/storage bottle should be tightly closed.

Bromine water solution.

The molecular formula is Br2/ H2O

  • Bromine water solution can be used as a disinfectant and chemical intermediate.
  • Bromine can also be used in agriculture chemicals as insecticides.
  • It is also used as an alternative to chlorine or in pharmaceuticals.
  • Moreover, bromine water is a good oxidizing agent.

Apparatus needed to prepare bromine water.

  • Volumetric flask
  • Beaker
  • Storage bottle
  • Distilled water
  • Glass rod
  • Funnel

Chemicals needed:

  • Potassium bromide
  • Liquid bromine

Method:

  • Dissolves 10g potassium bromide in 25 ml water.
  • Add 3ml liquid bromine.
  • Add distilled water 100 ml solution in a volumetric flask.
  • Label the bottle with the names, date, and batch numbers.

Safety precaution and storage.

  • Bromine as an element can cause harm or burn the skin.
  • Wear protective clothes such as goggles or groves.
  • Make sure the environment is well-ventilated.
  • Avoid inhalation of the gas or vapor
  • Store it in a dark-colored bottle.
  • Also make sure the bottle is tightly closed.
  • Moreover, it should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place.
